“No, we could all use a dose of normal.”
“We really could.” I peeked over his shoulder at Henry who was trying to fit a huge piece of pancake into his mouth. “At least he’s doing okay.”’
Adam nodded. “Thanks to the wolf, the vampires couldn’t take the medallion.”
“My gods, that’s what it is.”
“He can touch the damn trying.”
I blinked rapidly. “Oh?”
“Yeah, he’s some kind of… I don’t know. Super wolf. He can handle the medallion without getting burned. I think Donovan said he was going to talk to him more this morning.”
“Do you want to sit in on that?”
He shook his head. “No, I want to be here with you and Henry.”
I smiled warmly, not bothering to hide my relief. After all the stress that had piled up lately, I needed a day with my family. No vampires. No black wolves. No artifacts, research or war.
Just family.
“You sure?” I asked. “I wouldn’t mind.”
“Yes, you would.”
I snickered. “You got me there.”
He circled his arms around my waist and sighed into me. “Cherry, I’m going to pick you and Henry first every time. You know that, right?”
“I do now.”
“Good. I’ll keep reminding you so you don’t forget.”
I caressed his cheek. “I’ll hold you to it.”
“I sure hope so, cherry.”
After gathering the rest of the pancakes, I carried them to the table where Henry had made a mess of the syrup. Adam and I chuckled while picking up our forks and digging into the heap in front of Henry. He didn’t mind sharing with us, smiling while reaching for his large glass of milk.
“You have a huge appetite, kid,” I told Henry. “Think you can handle learning some cooking stuff later at the inn?”
He grinned. “Dad, can I go with Charlotte today?”
Adam hummed curiously. “I don’t see why not.”
“Yes!” Henry pumped his fists in the air. “I get to learn how to cook!”
I laughed. “Eat some more. You need your strength.”
“Okay, Mom.”
For the second time in the same twenty minutes, my heart lurched in my chest. This time, I didn’t cry. I just leaned into the feeling of actually being part of a family.
When Henry finished eating, he carried his plate to the sink. Adam told him to go clean up. “You’re visiting Donovan today.”
“Is he?” I asked when Henry ran off. “I thought I was taking him to the inn.”
“We have some catching up to do.”
